Creating Natural, Beautiful Lips
By Dr. Jed Horowitz, Newport Beach Plastic Surgeon
Our lips are one of the most expressive and defining features of the face. Even subtle movements communicate emotion and confidence. Today, both surgical and non-surgical treatments allow us to enhance the lips in ways that look natural, balanced, and refined — never overdone.
At our Newport Beach plastic surgery practice, we focus on achieving harmonious, elegant results tailored to each patient’s anatomy and goals.

Non-Surgical Lip Treatments
Many patients seek fuller, smoother, or more youthful lips without surgery. Modern injectable treatments allow us to:
Add volume
Improve lip shape and contour
Smooth vertical lip lines
Enhance the cupid’s bow
Lift downturned corners
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers
We use advanced hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvéderm®, Restylane®, Volbella®, and Belotero®. These fillers vary in elasticity (“G prime”) and cross-linking structure, allowing us to customize softness, definition, and longevity.
Softer fillers (lower G prime) are ideal for lips.
Products like Volbella tend to cause less swelling and can last up to one year in some patients.
Fillers can be dissolved if adjustments are needed.
The Lip Flip
A “lip flip” uses a small amount of neuromodulator (Botox® or Dysport®) to gently relax the muscle around the upper lip, allowing it to roll slightly outward for subtle enhancement.
Fat Grafting
For patients seeking a longer-lasting option, fat grafting uses your own natural fat to enhance volume and contour.
Addressing Aging Lips
As we age, lips may lose volume, develop fine lines, and elongate. Sun exposure, genetics, and habits such as smoking can contribute to:
Vertical lip lines (“smoker’s lines”)
Loss of vermillion show (the red part of the lip)
Downturned corners
Longer distance between nose and lip (philtrum)
Treatments may include:
Fillers
Neuromodulators
Chemical peels
Dermabrasion
Laser resurfacing
Often, a combination approach produces the most natural rejuvenation.
Surgical Lip Lift Procedures
For patients seeking a more permanent improvement, a surgical lip lift may be the ideal solution.
A lip lift shortens the distance between the nose and upper lip, allowing more of the upper teeth and vermillion to show. This creates a youthful, balanced, and naturally fuller appearance.
Types of Lip Lifts
Subnasal (“Bullhorn”) Lip LiftAn incision hidden beneath the base of the nose shortens the philtrum and enhances upper lip definition.
Gull-Wing (Direct) Lip LiftInvolves excision along the lip border to increase visible vermillion. Helpful for significant lip lines.
Corner Lip LiftSmall incisions near the mouth corners elevate a downturned expression.
Vermillion AdvancementInternal incisions advance the red portion of the lip outward for subtle volume enhancement.

The goal is not simply larger lips — but proportion, harmony, and improved smile aesthetics.
