Who is a candidate?

Earlobe Reduction surgery are requested by patients who have extensively large earlobes that may be large from family traits, aging, the use of very large earrings or plugs, or previous facial surgery.  Torn Earlobes can occur when an earring is caught on something pulling it through the lobe. This will result in a Split Earlobe or Cleft Earlobe.  

The use of ear plugs and large piercings create large holes which require reconstruction to reform a normal appearing lobe.

Large Earlobes can occur as a family trait or just with aging.  Our ears continue to grow each decade of life.
 

What type of anesthesia is used?

Generally these procedures are performed under local anesthetic and require 15 to 30 minutes depending upon how complex the particular case is. These are in-office, out-patient procedures.

How long does it take to heal?

Early healing  for Earlobe Reduction occurs in the first  week.  I use dissolving sutures.  There are always asymmetries before and after surgery although I always try to make the two sides as even as is possible.  Scars are generally well hidden and may have a small amount of redness that can persist for several weeks or months. These can be treated with scar creams and laser treatments.  Re-piercing can be done 3 to 6 weeks after surgery. Swelling is usually significant in the first several weeks and some can persist for a few months but this is not as common.
 

How much does this cost?

Earlobe reduction usually costs between $500 and $1500 dollars depending upon the complexity of the correction.
